| "Sherlock Holmes Faces Death" is my personal favorite in the Rathbone/Bruce film series. It is based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's story "The Musgrave Ritual". It isn't a very faithful adaptation, but then there isn't much about this film series that is faithful to the canon. The film also engages in the practice of making everyone else stupid in order to make Holmes look smart. Lestrade is a complete idiot in this one. Watson isn't very bright either, however he does look fairly intelligent when compared with Lestrade. Overall, a quite enjoyable film if you don't mind something that's not very faithful to the short story that it is based upon. For a more faithful adaptation of this story, I would recommend the Granada series version. It's not entirely faithful either but it is more so than this version. |
