a MUST classic for Doris Day fans! |
This movie is a hoot! Soooooo funny ~ Doris Day returns to husband, James Gardner, after being stranded on an island for several years with a hunk of a man. She pretends to Gardner that he was a nerdy sort of fella and get Don Knotts, a shoe salesman, to play the part. Meanwhile, Gardner finds the real guy she was marooned with and sees how virile he is.
Well, the comedy ensues and it is hilarious. There is one scene in a carwash which will have you giddy beyond silly! Don't miss out on this true classic. They don't make movies like this anymore - they try (DOWN WITH LOVE with Rennee Zellwegger) but they can't do it! |
"I'm all in a spin...about to give in" |
| Doris Day at a personal and professional peak--working smoothly with James Garner and Thelma Ritter, and instigating a hilarious brawl with Polly Bergen. Day's reactions to her husband and mother-in-law years after getting shipwrecked on an island in the Pacific(with Chuck Conners!)are priceless, and when Doris gets a head of steam going, her kanipshin fits are wonderful to behold. The courtroom shenanigans at the beginning and near the end are tiresome(on one note), but everything else works, especially the two children playing Day's straight-talking daughters and Don Knotts as a shoe-salesman who loves bowling and chow mein. Looks MUCH better in widescreen(on the Fox Movie Channel)which the studio should one day duplicate on DVD. |
fabulous! |
| This is one of my all-time favourite movies (but then as I'm a big Doris fan, I'm biased!). Its a sad fact that this is a remake of the unfinished Marilyn Monroe/Dean Martin movie, 'Somethings Got To Give', but much as I love Marilyn, I just don't think that she could've brought the same humour and comedy timing that Doris did to this film. The partnership of James Garner and Doris Day is under-rated, if you have ever watched 'The Thrill of it all' then you'll know what I mean. Unfortunately I only have the VHS of this movie but I'm hoping that the studio will issue it on DVD soon - it's definitely worth it. Meanwhile, I would advise any romantic comedy/Doris Day/James Garner fans to check this movie out on VHS - or hire it if you can. Please note that you can also pick up a great selection of Doris's movies on DVD at Amazon - Check out 'Please Don't Eat The Daisies', 'With 6 You Get Eggroll', 'That Touch of Mink', 'Calamity Jane' and of course, all the Rock Hudson and Doris movies...sheer heaven! There is also a VHS box set of 'By the light of the silvery moon/On Moonlight Bay/Tea For Two' which is just wonderful. (I shouLd get commission from Amazon for all these plugs!!) :) |
