Get A James Burton, Hank Marvin or Hendrix Compilation first
| Greatest guitarist on the planet? Gatton, God rest his soul, is a damn good player; but he suffers from a severe case of Roy Buchanan clone disease. Great technical playing, but nothing original. I found myself fast forwarding one track after another until I found something that really rocked, twanged or jammed. Most of the previous reviews were obviously written by Danny Gatton fans. I am a guitar fan, and I know my guitar. I strongly suggest investigating music featuring the guitar of James Burton or Hank Marvin. Then work your way thru Duanne Eddy, Link Wray or The Ventures. Then get the Roy Buchanan Anthology. Some Danny Gatton albums are highly collectable and pricey. But if you can find his album "Relentless" with Joey De Francesco, buy that first. | |
The Greatest Guitarist You Never Heard of!
| .. is how Danny Gatton was described by Guitar Player magazine in the 1980's. The title was accurate - Gatton's playing defied catagorization. His ability to meld nearly every style (from country to rock-a-billy to jazz) and execute it with absolutely terrifying technique is what made him unique. Every serious fan of the guitar needs to have this in their library! We miss you. Danny. | |
Great guitar, bad Lite Jazz
| I found this in a used CD shop. I had a vague sense of who Danny is, and the liner notes had me excited. Rockabilly, blues, jazz, bluegrass, looked great! Indeed the sections where he lets it rip are fantastic. Unfortunately many of the songs are arranged in a 70s-lite-jazz style with peppy, bouncy horns, etc. Like another reviewer below, I kept forwarding thru the tracks looking for something that smokes. A few tracks satisfy (when Danny cuts loose he's amazing), but there's too much pseudo-jazz-junkola for my taste. |
