 THE MANY SIDES OF TAKE 6 | |
| Though widely known for their innovative A Cappella, this release celebrates the many styles of Take 6. And that's fine with me. Not only are they comfortable with the likes of MARY, A QUIET PLACE, SPREAD LOVE, or SO MUCH 2 SAY; but supply the instruments, and they're just as fantastic with BIGGEST PART OF ME, DESTINY, or the two new selections: ONE AND THE SAME(with CeCe Winans). The other being: THE BEST STUFF IN THE WORLD TODAY CAFE. Both absolutely incredible! As you can tell, I'm not a strict advocate of "only A Cappella for Take 6." These guys are much too talented, to be limited to one style or genre. My only complaint? Though this may represent their "Greatest Hits," and they are a good sampling of the fellas; the omissions are far too noticeable. Surely we can expect a second CD, sometime in the near future? Maybe even the rare Japanese recordings(I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU and ALMOST PARADISE). Enjoy their diversity. | |

| All the great Take 6 songs are here on "Greatest Hits," but the biggest treat of all has to be the previously unreleased "The Best Stuff in the World Today Café." Beginning with a lazy vocal groove, it soon turns into a finger-popping exercise underscored with Take 6's signature vocal virtuosity. The lyrics are a clever harkening back to Biblical references to God's word being food for the spirit: Then the waiter said to me, "I L-O-V-E U" is here, as is "Mary", "Spread Love," and other Take 6 classics. One of the more unusual tunes is a collaboration in which the group backs up Stevie Wonder on a jazzed-up version of Georg Friedrich Handel's "O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings to Zion" from Handel's magnificent "Messiah." It works strikingly well and sounds as contemporary as anything else on this terrific album. | |

| I heard Take 6 sing "Moon River" with Stevie Wonder on the new "Utimate Mancini" cd and was completely astounded. Although I have heard of them a few times it was never really enough to prompt me to buy a cd. What a fool I was to wait so long. How do they do that? Cover all that range of sound and spiritual emotion without needing another single instrument except their astonishing voices that blend like cream and strawberries? Alvin Chea, David Thomas, Claude McKnight, Cedric Dent, and Joey and Mark Kibble have the most scrumptuous harmony I've ever heard and I adore a cappella harmonies and have been a fan of Manhattan Transfer and yes - even the Backstreet boys for a long time. Their message is so hopeful and the buoyancy of their music is heavenly. Go for "One and the Same" with the incredible CeCe Winans, and from "The Messiah" Handel's "Oh Thou That Tellest Good Tidings to Zion" with Stevie Wonder first. Then try "The Best Stuff in the World Today Cafe" (for the spiritually hungry and aren't we all?); "Mary;" "A Quiet Place;" "Fly Away" which has a remarkable African vibe; "Destiny;" the adorable "So Much 2 Say;" "U Turn;" and one of my very favorite tracks "Setembro (Brazilian Wedding Song)." The more commercial, popular tracks to me would be "I L-O-V-E U," "Spread Love," and "Biggest Part of Me" originally done by Ambrosia but done here with soul du jour. Already these tracks are some of my most treasured listens. This cd is one of those cd's I find (and I LOOK) maybe every two years or so that's off the beaten path but makes me breathless. The tracks are so different in inspiration but so similar in excellence, this cd is a must have for anyone who genuinely appreciates the meaning of the word virtuoso. |
