It doesnt matter that Nick Oliveri isnt on this record. I've always liked Josh Hommes voice better than Oliveri's, so i dont care that much. The missing of Dave Grohl, on the other hand, is kind of a loss for the band. On "Songs for the Deaf" he was excellent, especially on "No One Knows".
But QOTSA had no problem with making great albums without Grohl, in the past ("R"), so that shouldnt be that big of a problem either.

And now for the music. "Lullabies to Paralyze" is possibly my favorite QOTSA album (just possibly). Its more experimental than the past releases, and its often a good thing when a band goes experimental. Just look at Radiohead.
They have come along way since the sludgy stoner rock of their first album. The stoner vibe is still there, but theyve mixed it with something more clever ("Someones in the Wolf").

Standout tracks are:
Tangled Up In Plaid, Burn the Witch, Little Sister (The albums first single), Someones in the Wolf and The Blood Is Love.
"Lullabies to Paralyze" is very highly recommended.

This one took a few listens to appreciate and now is near impossible to stop listening to. It is brilliantly produced and the song-craftmanship is fantastic. There are so many different audio colors and tracks going on within each song that you can't possibly get everything on just 1, 2 or even 3 listens. The DVD version is a must as you get to see highlights of the album being made track by track. The songs are all fantastic and a bit more "mature" than their previous efforts. Some are really quite "haunting" in atmosphere - really unexpected at times, and very, very cool. The previous QOTSA CD's are all great albums, but this one is by far the most cohesive and well executed. Nick O. really is not missed at all except for his spastic vocals - I was surprised at this as he's been such a partner to Josh for so long. All in all a fantastic cd that is a must for your collection.

I was initially disappointed in Lullabies to Paralyze, which is, no matter what way you slice it, a substantially lesser album than Songs For The Deaf. I think my issue is that as a cohesive whole, it doesn't accomplish much, as each song seems to have no connection to any around it - whereas Songs For The Deaf seemed to be on one grand arc to save hard rock as we know it (and for a while, it did - maybe it was having Dave Grohl and Nick Oliveri on the payroll). So, that being said, that means that the song for song effort is at least solid, and occasionally brimming with the bravado, pulse, and sensuality of their best work. "Burn The Witch" is a stomping anthem, "Medication" a slash-and-burn adrenaline shot, and the serious songs "I Never Came" and "Long Slow Goodbye" are as masterfully emotional as anyone creates these days. Plus, the record's seven minute climax "Someone's In The Wolf" is astonishing on its own - at turns as invigorating and terrifying as it is melodic. For songs that original and unexpected, I have no problem accepting a lesser Josh Homme effort.
