Trent Does it Again--Nothing not to love here!
| I won't try to recap all the positive things that have already been said by other reviewers for this album, but I will say this: don't try to judge the album on only one or two listens. Unless you're some kind of genius, you can't do it (as some so-called "professional" reviewers have apparently tried). The music is too layered and varied rhythmically and lyrically to be able to pick up everything all at once. I had to listen to it at least about 6 times before I could begin to anticipate all of the music's subtleties, and there really is joy in the anticipation ("Sunspots" being my current favorite example). Even the album's most accessible track, "The Hand That Feeds", takes a few tries to really get into (no wonder that as of this writing, it is again the number-one single on the Billboard charts). But because of all that inherent complexity, the music has a low burn-out rate; most mainstream music is only listenable for a couple-dozen times at most before the listener gets bored with it. "With Teeth", on the other hand, has staying-power (I've listened to the album at least about 40 times so far, if not more...I've since lost count, and I'm not bored of it by any means).
Just give the music an honest chance, and you won't be disappointed. Yes, Trent's back, as good as (though, arguably, *better* than) ever.
NIN - With Teeth | |
| This is not trents best work, but still great. At first it was a little disapointing but it grows on you. Over all a good album with some amazing songs. "Right Where It Belongs" is worth buying the album by itself, and "Every Day Is Exactly the Same" is also amazing. I suggest the dualdisc version. The Album is better in 5.1. | |
Swallow It All. | |
| Let's cut through all the pontification and analysis of the other reviewers here. "With Teeth" is a good album. Trent was classically trained, and it shows in the craft of his music. Few other artists can match what he has done in so few albums. "With Teeth" is more like "Pretty Hate Machine" in its immediacy and commercialism. Basically, Trent does Trent. One could question why a nearly 40 year old man is still so angry and bitter about life? Especially after 16 years? Therapy? I'm waiting for Trent to grow emotionally, but in the meantime, the music is good, and that makes up for the lack of change. The album doesn't begin to lose some steam until the end. He could have left off "Sunspots", "The Line Begins To Blur" and "Beside You In Time" and been no worse for wear.
The Dual Disc format is excellent. There's nothing like hearing all the details of each song in 5.1 surround sound. The the other extras on the dvd are paltry, and I think Bruce Springsteen put the format to better use on his latest. The video for "That Hand That Feeds" is mildly amusing, but it doesn't come close to "Closer". Verdict: Nine Inch Nails fans should be happy, and I don't understand all these complaints from other reviewers here. How could you not like "The Hand That Feeds", "With Teeth", "Love Is Not Enough", "Only", "Getting Smaller" and "You Know What You Are?" |
