Where's NIN future headed?
| Let's be honest here. We've waited 6 damn years for another, more epic, and all in all better album than his previously emotionally compelling albums. What we get here on most of the CD is aggro-industrial programming effects backup (yes, the usual NIN stuff) but haven't we had enough of this deja vu already? Trent should have spent the last six years relentlessly experimenting and brainstorming new musical ideas and personas. Pretty Hate Machine was his breakthrough hit that defined the industrial scene, The Downward Spiral was a dark, self destructive journey through madness, controversy and drug-addiction, and the Fragile (which I do not own) probably headed "further down the spiral" to even darker beats, crushing rhythms, and depressing scenarios. I'll be honest, there ARE the standouts: Only- just as funny as it is menacing; All The Love In the World- a soft but technical beat that has a hip vibe to it; Everyday Is Exactly The Same- a song I can really relate to; With Teeth (the title track)- prob. the heaviest f**kin one on here; Sunspots- my pick for the best song on here; Beside You In Time- a very relaxing, trance-inducing synthesizer ballad; and Right Where It Belongs- a poignant closer that is just as beautiful as it is tear-jerking. This is not the best NIN album I own( by any means ), but you just pick it up and see for yourself and foretell what kind of future lies ahead for Trent Reznor. | |
Big gigantic let down | |
| It has been six years since Trent has released a disc, and this it the best he can do?
This may be just as dark as Pretty Hate Machine or The Downward Spiral, but it lacks spirit, it lacks enthusiasm, it lacks...teeth. The best songs on the disc would make really great Garbage tunes, or material for an awesome Smashing Pumpkins reunion, but for NIN it's just boring. Next time when you take six years off Trent, catch up with modern times. My Chemical Romance, Spalding Rockwell and The Used are putting out much better discs, and you can guarantee they aren't going to wait six ####ing years to put out another one.
Trent shines again as a master in his dark domain.
| This is a very impressive album from Trent and the NIN crew, this album shows the pure talent of Trent as did Tools Lateralus album. Anyone that liked Pretty Hate Machine will love this album. |
